Lesson H-UIII-L2: The Olympics: Terror at Munich

Unit III: Historical Context of Terrorism
Grade Levels: 9-12
Time: 150 minutes

Students watch the film 21 Hours at Munich and read about the attacks on Israeli athletes at the Munich Olympics in 1972, the group that carried out the attack and murders, and the response of various governments, organizations, and the people worldwide. They identify the organization claiming responsibility for the attack, the attitude of the attackers, the actions of governments that followed the attack, and the short and long-range impact of the actions. Students also apply a modern definition of terrorism to the actions of the group and the parent organization, analyze their actions and claims, and explain the eventual outcome and results of the attack. Finally, students investigate the Centennial Olympic bombing at the Atlanta Olympic Games in 1996. (Grades 9–12)
